Jf-17 Block 3 - A Game Changer For PAF

Recently, Pakistan Air force announced the Induction of Latest version of Jf-17 block 3 in its inventory. Jf-17 prototype took its first flight in China Last year. The Jf-17 block 3 looks similar to the previous versions of Jf-17 from an aerodynamic point of view.

However, there are some major upgrades Jf-17 block 3 received. I will discuss it below:

1-An AESA Radar.

Jf-17 block 3 is equipped with an advanced Chinese AESA radar called "KLJ 7-A" radar. It has a predicted range of about 170 km for air targets and for the sea, it has a fantastic range of 220km.

KLJ has a scan range of 64 targets while it can track up to 16 targets and engaging 4 targets at the same time. It has different modes but the most important mode is TWS mode which means track while the scan.

2- Engine

Jf-17 block 3 is equipped with the Russian RD-93 engine which is used in the earlier block of jf-17s. So there is no engine up-grade for Jf-17 block 3. Maybe in the future, Paf will plan to upgrade the Jf-17 engine.

3-Air to Air Weaponry

Jf-17 block 3 is expected to be equipped with the latest Chinese PL-15 missile which has a range up to 150-200 km. It is unclear whether Paf has inducted this missile or not but surely, this is a part of upgrade Jf-17 will have.

4-Missile Approach Warning Reciever

The missile approach warning receiver is also included in JF-17 block 3. It tells the direction of incoming missiles currently tracking the jet and guides the pilot on how to evade the missiles.

5- HMS

Helmet Mounted Sigh Display is an advanced system that can track enemy plane without the need of maneuvring. A pilot can simply move his head towards the enemy plane and the missiles will lock him immediately. This gives an advantage in Dogfight which is unlikely to happen in the INDO-PAK conflict as Bvr has taken the position.

These are some of the major upgrades that Jf-17 will be taking. However, Paf has listed the weapons package for this jet. An updated list will be provided after Paf provides full details about the Jet.
